Microscopic and spectroscopic characterization of nutlets and mucilage of Ocimum basilicum and Thymus vulgaris

Ocimum basilicum L. (basil) and Thymus vulgaris (thyme) are well-known medicinal plants from the Lamiaceae family. Although micromorphological characteristics mucilage production of basil thyme fruits have already been partially studied, aim this work was to examine samples collected in Serbia. The results obtained by stereomicroscope scanning electron microscopy showed that nutlets these species differ size, shape, abscission scar, ornamentation pattern. both produced a milky opaque with fibrils, faster more abundant reaction. Also, is first report on evaluation chemical composition two grown Serbia using Raman microspectroscopy. Some differences were found between investigated regard profile mucilage. mainly determined content phenolic compounds, fatty acids, proteins. examined good sources phenols, unsaturated polysaccharides. spectroscopy seems be suitable technique for analysis type samples, as it allows identification spatial distribution plant metabolites.
